EXCERPT FROM:
MOM I’M GAY,
ONCE . . . TWICE,
COMING OUT AS A FAMILY
BY JANE MINKLEY, 2004

One Sunday morning in the fall of 1987, I awoke to get ready for Sunday school and church. My husband of nineteen years had died a year and a half before; leaving my two teenage sons, now ages 14 and 17, and me to make our own journeys through the grief process. The grief did not sweep over me as often now and I had found a new routine for my life.

I brought clean laundry into my oldest son’s room and set it on the bed. Mark was in the room and said, “Mom, I need to tell you something.”

“Okay.” I said.

“Mom, I’m gay,” he said. I slowly sat on the bed. After my husband’s death, my sons and I had become closer. We often shared our personal thoughts and ideas and gave support to each other. This took me by surprise. I felt my stomach knotting up.

“I love you no matter what. We can work this out together. What do you need me to do?” I was scared.

“Keep this a secret!” he said. Fear showed in his face. That moment began our life of silence and our journey into unknown territory. I loved my son and I was scared for him. I felt he needed my support, help and protection. When Mark came out to me and then went right back “into the closet,” I went in the closet also.
